Artist’s Statement:
The work in Walk Along deals with journey, passage, routes of discovery and meeting long distance goals. It is a recent investigation of pushing limits, dreaming and evaluating personal and public paths taken within the past 6 years. Some of the work is about adjusting to everyday activities such as living in a new apartment or adjusting to a new town and job. Other works in this on going series deals with bigger, longer, out-of-the-ordinary adventures I have either embarked on, or intend to take.
In Walk of the Triple Crown was a tangible attempt to finish a path I started in 2002 when thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Georgia to Maine and continued when mountain biking the Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada in 2004. The completion of the Triple Crown will come when the third of three long distance tails in North America is walked, the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada on the west coast. This video documented performance is an attempt to dream of a possible reality to bring closure to this raw journey as I ritualistically walk the three trails on an elementary school playground.
Walk Along is a collaborative video work with Fairmont State Students Stacey Elder, Miles Holbert, Trevor Oxley, Patrick Sheridan Sibbett, Andrew Smith and Jason Spinks. Collaborators agreed to follow a route mapped out for them, which explored parts of the newly renovated campus. Videos were to be between 5- and 7 mins in length, all in-camera edits and could document what they chose.
Out Running Cement Shoes is a video documented endurance performance, which was a successful attempt to run in nylon hose and work clothes from Shepherdstown, my place employment to Harpers Ferry, the psychological halfway point of the Appalachian Trail. The 12 mile labored run was interrupted by the constant struggle to keep the Nylons up, as a symbol of maintaining professionalism while I journeyed further from work and closer to the AT. The run followed the river, which served as a constant nag of weightiness and responsibility symbolized by illusions to cement shoes.
The Touch, The Smothering Feel of Ownership Forgotten, 6 Years Revisited is a video documented performance that came from rediscovering a large drawing entitled, The Touch, The Smothering Feel of Ownership… Upon returning to Shepherd as a professor 6 years later, I re-discovered the abandoned drawing and committed to erasing it as a ritualistic symbol of transitioning from student status to professional status in the same institution.
A Tour With Brad Gilbert, Aerospace Education Program, an Exercise in Looking evolved from a curiosity with Fairmont State’s Airplane Hanger located in Bridgeport WV. Throughout the tour I attempted to maintain eye contact with Gilbert, creating an hour and 15 mins of poorly documented film that often left the tour guide without a full head. Realizing the footage was amusingly too poor to show, I resigned to creating drawings from video stills of the tour. Without looking at my paper, much like I blatantly hadn’t with the film, I created blind contour drawings of Gilbert for an hour and 15 mins, representing the duration of the tour. The finished work includes extracted audio from the tour.
