Title: Mindscapes
Grade Level: 11th
Approximate time: 3 classes
WV CSO:
Objectives:
Student will:
• Describe and tell about how they decided on their mindscape.
• Illustrate their landscape ideas with a resource picture, thumbnail drawings, and a painting.
• Construct a landscape painting with choice between paint brushes and trowels.
• Explain their choice of landscape in reference to color and point of view with perspective,
Learning Objectives:
Students will spend time thinking and discussing the many beautiful different places they have seen and visited in West Virginia. Then the artist Lynn Boggess will be brought to the discussion. We will talk about him as an artist and his works of art. It’s important to connect the relationship between Boggess’ ideas and the places in West Virginia. I will have the students read over his artist statement and highlight ten words or word combos that appear like art terms to them and as a whole class we will define them. Students will have several works of art completed. When assignments are completed we will all participate in class critique.
Materials: Oil paint, (or any paint), brushes, linseed oil, palettes, dawn dish liquid, trowels/ paint knives, vegetable oil, mineral spirits, pencils, paper, pre stretched canvas, and landscape resources.
Visuals: Teacher example made previous to class and a during class demonstration. Plus, an example of Lynn Boggess work and some other examples of landscapes in history.
Day 1:
Procedure:
Motivation:
- Today we are going to talk about landscape painting 16th century to the 21st century. How it has changed and what can we add to it or how might we create a landscape unique to our own style.
- Have you ever seen interesting pictures of land , water , or sky? Maybe in a hospital, school, or home. So where and what were they like. I want to know what you already know about landscapes.
- Sometimes when I go fishing with my friend I try to find a neat landscape that I find appealing. So when I find one I stop and watercolor paint quickly. The scenes later remind me of the mood of the day. I remember the day better because of this recorded image.
- Ok, are there any cool places or scenes you all have run across in West Virginia or outside West Virginia for that matter. Start considering an outdoor scene. You may have pictures from a vacation, a place near your home, you may use magazines, or you may have a place only in your memory and thoughts. You may use mindscapes as well, like Lynn Boggess the painter whom was my painting teacher at FSU. He did the show New works by Lynn Boggess.
- I will hand out a passage about Lynn Boggess’s show. I want you to read it and highlight ten words you feel that you can back up as art related terms. We will discuss the passage and talk about the words. I may call out and ask individual students for their words, so be prepared. Optional- is that we may go to the library or computer lab to look at virtual gallery online.
- Alright begin brainstorming.
- Begin some thumbnails or preliminary sketches to find the perfect landscape you would like to be your first work.
Description of Activity I:
- Remember the drawings I had you make. Today you will choose which you want to use and you will begin to do your light
- Choose between or trowel for painting application. We will use the same method of paint mixing as Lynn Boggess. Thus to experience how he may feel. We will consider words to describe how Boggess may feel while making art. We want to see what it is like to walk in someone else’s shoes but at the same time use a technique that is our own. I may let the students choose between paint Medias to be flexible to their needs.
- I want the students to work with haste that their own style will emerge. Plus that we only have one work day. We will focus on the completion of one work.
- At the end of class do a reflective analysis as a group. Compare and contrast a work on the basis of style, presentation, subject matter and overall completion of the project. Also, hang them up. Boggess would probably tell us to work hastily!
Closure Day I:
- I want you all to think about your own experience compared to Boggess’ and the type of experiences he has.
- You have all done such a great job as landscape painters. Did anyone particularly enjoy this assignment?
- Would anyone like to continue to landscape paint? (”You’ll see this again”).
- Every one did exceptional. Make sure your name is on the back signed on the front, make sure your piece is up and secured until it finishes drying.
