Title: Drawing: Mass Gesture
Grade: 9th
WV CSO’s:
• VA.O.VAI. 1. 1 distinguish among variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, techniques and processes.
• VA.O.VAI. 2. 3 create two dimensional and three dimensional artworks based on elements if art and principles of design using appropriate media, processes, and techniques to solve specific problems.
• VA.O.VAI. 6. 1 compare and connect the creative processes used in visual arts to other disciplines.
Ojectives:
Students will:
• Discuss drawing and mass gesture. Also we will discuss the characteristics of mass gesture.
• Use different drawing materials in this lesson such as charcoal, pastel, and brush and ink etc….• Create a few fast mass gestures using a simple pencil and an eraser.
• Discuss the human figure. In class they will study the proportions of the human body.
• Create a final mass gesture using the human figure as a subject.
• Critique each other’s final project based on the individual’s use of the characteristics of gesture drawing.
Rationale:
Students will have a better understanding of drawing tools and techniques in drawing. Students will focus on the drawing technique of mass gesture. They will know the characteristics of gesture drawing. The students will have a better understanding in drawing in drawing the human figure and using correct proportions.
Materials:
• Paper
• Pencils, charcoal, pastels, and brush and ink
• Visual aids
• Student models
Procedure:
Day 1
Have any of you done any drawing in your free time at home? (Pause for answers) What materials do you use if you do draw? (Pause for answers) We are going to use a technique called mass gesture today. Mass gesture is a series of poses taken by a model or an object in a short period of time. It is a form of expressive mark making. (This means that you draw really really fast!) This type of drawing is often and exercise for students. This kind of drawing involves the principle of movement. Now we will look at a few examples of mass gesture drawing. (Look at and discuss examples)
• What are some of the characteristics you see in this drawing?
• What drawing materials do you think the artist used?
• What is the subject matter?
Day 2
Yesterday we learned and looked at examples of mass gesture drawing. Today I am going to give you a demonstration using charcoal, pencil, and ink. (I will give a demonstration using various drawing tools and answer any questions students may have.) Now I want you to find and object in the classroom and I want you to do a few small studies using mass gesture to practice for our final mass gesture project. You will just be using pencil for this exercise. At the end of class I will ask what they learned today about mass gesture and what they thought about the style of mass gesture.
Day 3
Today we will focus on getting towards our goal of making a final mass gesture drawing with our subject matter being the human figure. The human figure is very complex and it is hard to draw correctly. (At this time I will ring a skeleton in for students to see the human figure without the flesh.) We need to learn how to draw the proportions. ( As a class we will talk about where the arms and the legs fall on the body and size and length.) Now I will bring out the model and we will discuss the real human figure. (Pause for questions and discussion) Now we will practice drawing the human figure until the end of class.
Day 4/5
Today we are starting on our final assignment. Their will be three different models in the room doing different poses. You can choose any model to draw as long as you have three drawings finished by the end of class tomorrow. The guidelines for this assignment are that you have to use the characteristics of mass gesture for your project. The subject matter must be of the human figure. Each student must have three finished drawings using pastel, charcoal, pencil, or brush and ink.
Conclusion:
When everyone in the class is finished with their three completed drawings we will have a class critique. Each student will have to talk about their work and how they used the characteristics of mass gesture drawing. And their classmates tell them which drawing is most successful and which drawing is least successful. They will base their opinion on the use of the characteristics of mass gesture.
Evaluation:
I will grade my students on their understanding of the human figures. Also I will grade them on how well they understood the concept of mass gesture. I will lok at the exercise drawings from day one to their finish products of their three drawings. Also I will grade each student on their effort they put into their drawings.
