Ashley Bunner Title: Wire Sculptures Grade: General Art I Approximate time: 6 days WV CSO’s: • VA.O.VAI.1.3 use materials, tools, and technology in a safe and responsible manner. • VA.O.VAI.2.2 analyze design structures and functions of two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks. • VA.O.VAI.2.3 create two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks based on elements of art and principles of design using appropriate media, processes, and techniques to solve specific problems. • VA.O.VAI.5.2 analyze and discuss how and why specific works were created. Objectives: Students will: • State their own definition of sculpture • Analyze different artists’ sculptures especially Mark Soppeland’s work. • Discuss his work and how his work is different from other sculptures, materials, etc…. • Watch me give a demonstration on how to make a wire sculpture • Create a sculpture out of wire. • Have a critique with all their other classmates • Review what we have learned about sculpture and Mark Soppeland. Rationale: Students will learn about sculptures and why they are made. We will focus on looking at Mark Soppeland’s work especially at his sculptures. We will have a discussion about his work and each student can be asked to state their opinion on his work. Students will learn about materials used in Soppeland’s work and other sculptures. Students will learn that Soppeland uses all found objects. This can be connected ot the world trying to “Go Green”. Students will then make a sculpture out of wire. Materials: • Visual aids • Examples • Wire • Pliers Day 1 Today we are going to look at some artists that do sculptures especially one in particular, Mark Soppeland. Does anyone know what a sculpture is? (Pause for student responses) A sculpture is a three dimensional object that is created out of clay, metal, wood, wax, found objects, etc… Here are some sculptures made by different artists. (Pause to show visual aids) What do you guys think about sculptures? (Pause for responses) What materials did you see the artists use? (Pause for responses) Now we are going to look at Mark Soppeland’s work. (Pause to show visual aids) What do you think of his sculptures? What were the materials he used? What are your opinions on his work? Do you like his work or dislike his work. (Pause for group discussion) Mark Soppeland chose found objects to create his sculptures. He says that our culture is very wasteful so he uses found objects for the material in his works. He also uses the element of light with most of his sculptures. We are going to make a sculpture for our next project. We will use less complicated materials to make our sculptures but we will still be making a sculpture. For some of you this will be your first sculpture you will make. We will start with the basics of sculpture before moving into more complicated materials. For our sculpture we will be making ours out of wire. Wire is an everyday object that is used various ways. We want to work with metal but I don’t want it to be too complicated ofr your first sculpture. For next class be thinking about an idea for your sculpture assignment. It can be a figure, it can be an animal. The sky is the limit! Day 2 Today we will be starting our wire sculptures. First I am going to go around the room and have every student share their idea before starting. Your idea has to be approved by me before starting. I will also be giving a demonstration before you start on your sculpture. (Now I will go around the room discussing everyone’s ideas and approving them. Then I will demonstrate how to create a wire sculpture.) I want everyone to be careful with the pliers they are sharp and we don’t want any accidents. I also want every student to wear safety goggles while cutting the wire. There are no exceptions on not wearing safety goggles. We want to be safe while cutting wire. After the demonstration everyone can get started on their ideas for their sculptures. I will go around the room to make sure everyone is doing their work and if any student needs help I will be there to help them out. Day 3-5 Students will have the whole class period to work on their sculptures. Day 6 This class period we will critique everyone’s wire sculpture. Each student can tell the class what the wire sculpture is suppose to be and why they chose that object. We will discuss how successful each wire sculpture is and what needs to be improved. At the end of our critique we will go over what we have learned about Mark Soppeland and the creation of sculptures. We will also go over why we learned about sculpture. Sculpture is a way to be hand on and work three dimensionally. Working three dimensionally is good to learn because most are is on flat surfaces such as painting and drawing. Evaluation: I will grade each student on how well they completed the assignment and if they put forth a great amount of effort to create their sculpture. I will also grade them on how well their wire sculpture looks like what they were trying to portray. Since this might be their first sculpture I will base most of their grade on how well they grasped the concept of sculpting and if they tried their best to make a good wire sculpture. I will also look at how well they grasped the concept of creating a work that is three dimensional. |
